Select healthier foods this Christmas

We are on the final countdown to Christmas next week. The holidays mean different things to different people. But there are some unifying factors. Nothing to do with religious beliefs, it’s all about food and drink. Plenty will get consumed, and most of it will be unhealthy. Yes, we wait for a whole year to get to the Christmas festivities. You might argue that there is therefore some justification for excessive indulgence. You wouldn’t really be wrong, so long as you watch what goes down your throat. There will be lots of roasts, calories-laden carbs and, cool fizzling and alcoholic drinks to wash everything down. But there will be other choices too. Salads, greens, lots of vegetables and fruits will be aplenty. And so too will be freshly pressed juices and the plain old water. You will be spoilt for choice.

Cancer Misdiagnosis is common medical error

Very frequently we are told that most cancer patents present late when the disease is too advanced to be cured. However, recently, I met a woman in her late 50's who had been undergoing routine annual medical checks including screening for cancer of the cervix using conventional methods and had a clean bill of health as recent as October 2015. But here she was now with advanced cancer of the cervix.

Sex education and contraception: Long School Holidays and festivities

Like many moms of teen girls, Grace is struggling with whether to put her 15-year-old daughter on birth control pills. It's not that she wants her daughter to be sexually active; it's that, as she explains, "She's started to see a 17-year-old boy a lot. . . . The past two weeks my tour of duty has taken me back to the bedrock of human health research in Kenya. That is where my medical practice and research began quarter of a decade ago. I looked forward to linking up with old friends in the field of malaria, Tuberculosis and HIV research care and treatment. The reality in terms of knowledge has shifted massively, however, the disease burden still remain high. While there have been major scientific breakthroughs, this has not translated directly into new treatments available to patients.
