Ultrasound imaging involves exposing part of the body to high frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. This is the same principle involved in the sonar used by bats, ships and fishermen. When a sound wave strikes an object, it echoes back. By measuring these echo waves it is possible to determine how far away the object is and its size, shape, and consistency.

I constantly get confidential electronic consults from adolescents when they find themselves faced with unexpected health issues. The range of enquiries is varied, with trivial concerns at times, but very serious health matters at certain points. Each encounter usually ends up with specific advice, and a longer-term recommendation on maintaining optimal health.

We are well into a much rainy & cold season. This can feel pretty cold when we are used to tropical temperatures usually in the mid-20s. Cold spells have their unique health challenges, you want to keep yourself and your loved ones warm.Respiratory infections are pretty common in cold spells, and are easily passed on. The common cold and flu (influenza) are very contagious.

Colds tend to run their course and are self-resolving, but flus are much more serious and can be life-threatening. In extreme exposure to cold, exposed body parts like the face, hands and feet can suffer from irreversible damage to superficial blood vessels.

This can lead to what is called chilblains and frost bite, sometimes leading to permanent loss of function and amputation. You can also suffer from what is described as cold stress.

Blood group typing in pregnancy is important for various reasons. Standard blood groups are A, B, AB or O. Each group is additionally labelled either positive (+) or negative (-), which denotes what is called Rhesus factor. The Rhesus factor is a marker on the red blood cells, and majority of people have this factor and are labelled Rhesus positive. However, about one in every ten people are Rhesus negative.

Health care is a 24/7 business. After all, illnesses don’t choose when to strike. It can be any day of the week, and any time of the day. Whenever you have been unwell, am sure you have just made your way to the doctor’s and expected optimal attention regardless of the time or day of the week. For most cases all goes well, and your doctor seems to always function at their best regardless of the timing of your arrival.
