In my time as a clinician, I have had to answer several questions and dispel umpteen anxieties from patients. Most anxieties are genuine, and so are the myriad of unending questions. But every now and again, something comes up that has no straight answers.Recently a young couple asked me why doctors are fond of physically examining patients, seemingly touching and prodding all conceivable places in attempts to make a diagnosis.Is there no viable alternative? And can patients chose not to be physically touched by doctors? The answer is somewhere in between, a plain yes and no.

While life expectancy is higher for women than men in most countries, a number of health and social factors combine to create a lower quality of life for women. Some readers may be aware of a recent disturbing case in a top US hospital where a rogue doctor seriously abused the trust bestowed on him by his patients. He secretly recorded intimate pelvic examinations on the women who visited him for years.He ended up amassing thousands of pictures and videos of women’s genital organs. It’s unclear what his motives were, he gassed himself and committed suicide before he was brought to justice.
