Prolonged period intervals mandate gynecological review to work out the cause. Majority of women will have a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). The diagnosis will be confirmed following hormone tests and pelvic imaging. A minority may be diagnosed with rarer causes.
The human papilloma virus (HPV) commonly affects humans, and is usually transmitted sexually. But most HPV infections are temporary and have little longterm health effects. Majority of people clear the virus within 2 years. It is only in cases where the virus persists that untoward health effects usually manifest. Some HPV strains are associated with cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus and even cancers of the throat.
